All About Lasik

I was about 20/250 before Lasik surgery a couple of years ago. The procedure was painless, probably due to the eye numbing drops and Valium they gave me. The ride home (as a passenger, of course) was fairly uncomfortable, mainly due to light sensitivity. The doctor gave me dark goggles, but the light was still too bright. I was in some pain once I got home (maybe 3 hours post procedure), but I had some left over Vicodin, and took two doses of that. The Vicodin took the edge off. Slept fine that night. Woke up the next morning, and I COULD SEE FINE! Hallelujah! I was jazzed up about that. I drove myself to my one day check up (an 2 hour round trip) with no problems, although I did bring someone with me, as a backup driver, should it have been necessary. For that check up, I was seeing at 20/25, less than 24 hours after the surgery. I went to work that afternoon (doing ultrasound which really requires you to use your eyes). For my one week check up, I was seeing between 20/20 and 20/15. Other than the touch of pain I had post procedure, before I went to bed for the night, I had no other problems. I would do it again in a heartbeat! No more glasses, no more contacts, no more cleaning solutions and saline!

My advice would be to talk to everyone….talk to your family, friends and co-workers. Then ask your family, friends and co-workers to talk to their family, friends and co-workers….you get the idea. I found my surgeon by word of mouth. I asked everyone I know if they had Lasiks (or knew anyone who had Lasiks), and what doctor they went to. Almost everyone I talked to in my area went to the surgeon I ended up going to, and everyone was perfectly satisfied. I went into the procedure very confident!

Just one other thing….I went to a doctor who used computerized, laser equipment. No knives were involved. But, it cost me a pretty penny. I paid $5500 for both eyes, but I was not comfortable going to a doctor that advertised in the newspaper for $500 per eye. Sometimes you get what you pay for! Good luck to you!

• I had it done in January and quite frankly at the time I wanted to kill myself. The worst part for me was when they created the flap, it was uncomfortable. As well as the first few hours after surgery. But the actual laser procedure was easy. If I had the choice, I doubt I’d do it again but I do still recommend it. I am now 20/20 and have experienced no problems at all. Definitely worth it.

• My brother-in-law had it done and 3 years later he had to where glasses and now they can’t do it again because they messed-up his eyes my neighbor had it done too 5 years later she still had to wear glasses why let anyone mess with your eyes 1 boo boo and you could go blind I wouldn’t do it until they can do it like changing a diaper or set a broken arm but not until then Good Luck you do what you want to but you ask for it.   I was gonna do it but im glad I didn’t, i canceled two days before my operation… they would have really overcorrected me due to a mistake in when they were taking my perscription.. plus I have large pupils and my prescription changed in the last year…
  I guess I went to a bad place (Lasik MD in Toronto) because they didn’t tell me ANYTHING!

  My eyes are even already a little dry and I had to ask for eye drops for part of the exam, they simply just gave me the drops and didnt warn about the severe dry eye problems people with already dry eye experience after lasik …

  anyways i pray everyday for thanks that I didn’t do it because I would have been about a diopter over-corrected plus would have likely seen halos and had dry eyes because of my pupil size and pre-existing dry eyes!

  you mite be fine tho, i dont know what your story is… a VAST majority of people are fine… just be very careful with the pre-op, find out everything they are supposed to check and make sure they do it!! that was my issue!!!

• My husband had it last week.
  He had no pain. They put numbing drops in first and all he felt was a little pressure. it took about 15mn.
  He had to wear sunglasses 24-7 for a week shower and sleeping. He couldn’t drive for 2 days and no night driving for a week. He had a little trouble focusing from one eye for a few days but, he is fine now. He had 2 have 3 different eye drops 4 times a day for a week and now he has to have artificial tear drops all the time because it drys your eyes. He will have them 4 ever.
  I think that’s it. He See’s better than he ever has.

• What is 20/20 Vision?
  I HAVE 20/20 but when you see how many ppl have glasses/contacts, it makes me think about 20% because even if you dont have them, you probably dont have 20/20 or even 19/20! lol

  Anyway…

  LASIK is a very brief procedure. If everything goes well, it should be done in 15 minutes or less.

  It’s usually done while the patient is awake. Topical (eye drops) anesthesia is used. Its not that uncomfortable to the patient.

• Do You Need Eye Surgery?
  I personally only know one child who had this defect. While I have temporarily lost contact with the family (military family, moved), he still had not needed to have surgery and he had just had his 3rd birthday.
